BOCRA is mandated by the Communications Regulatory Authority Act to manage type approve of telecommunications equipment that may be connected, used, or operated to provide Communications Services in Botswana.
Type Approval regime is meant to ensure that communications equipment’s used in Botswana are compliant with national standards, which cover Health and Safety, Electro-magnetic Compatibility, interoperability, specific absorption rate and National Radio Frequency Plan.
The following equipment are exempted from type approval:
i. Personal Computers, laptops, Tablets, IoT etc. (embedded with WiFi transceivers, Bluetooth transceivers, with the provision that the Wi-Fi transceiver, Wi-Fi5 CERTIFIED™;
ii. Receive only Equipment (FM/MW/SW Radios, Television, Satellite decoders, Set-top Boxes);
iii. Vehicle embedded RTTE (Blue tooth, navigation, remote sensors, Car Keys etc), should however ensure that RTTE operate in the appropriate frequency bands;
iv. GMPCS Mobile Satellite Terminals with “ITU” mark.
