On September 20, 2024, the European Commission (EC) updated Regulation (EU) 2024/2462 concerning perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), its salts, and related substances.
Since 2019, Germany has proposed concentration limits for PFHxA. PFHxA is a substance used across various industries and is highly persistent, posing unacceptable risks to health and the environment. As a result, the regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) (EC) 1907/2006 was amended, and these changes have been applied throughout the European Union.
The revised regulation for cosmetics in Annex XVII of (EC) 1907/2006 is as follows:
1. From 10 October 2026 be placed market, or used, in a concentration equal to or greater than 25 ppb for the sum of PFHxA and its salts, or 1,000 ppb for the sum of PFHxA-related substances.
Although this regulation entered into force on October 10, 2024, which is 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU, a transition period of 24 months is granted for cosmetics, allowing until October 10, 2026, for compliance.
